Withdrawal: Paxil > Zoloft > Prozac

Tuesday, May 25th, 2004

Looks like the serotonin anti-depressants (ie. SSRIs and agonists) might create physical dependence, and thus can cause some serious withdrawal. Surprise, surprise! This article from the NYT points out that since serotonin is used throughout the body, including in the digestive system, there can be some very strange withdrawal effects. Interesting point about how drugs with a longer half-life produce less severe withdrawal because they leave the system more gradually.

cAMP and SC therapy for spinal regeneration

Monday, May 24th, 2004

No, we haven’t fallen off the face of the earth… just busy. (well, I can’t speak for Bayle)

Interesting news in the AOP section of Nature Medicine. Looks like a combined therapy of cAMP and schwann cells can aid in spinal cord regeneration. This study shows that inhibition of cyclic AMP signaling is a major problem in axon regeneration. (Definitely some connections here with the MM Poo work on growth cone turning in response to cAMP from a pipette.)
